Once, we created the ultimate space adventure crew for Meta

Years ago, Meta bet big on augmented reality with Meta Spark, and at SweetRush we worked on a project that included e-learning courses, explainer videos and interactive games starring a space crew sailing through the universe in search of adventure and scientific discoveries.

Early vector version of a character from a space crew designed for an interactive Meta game: a young explorer with voluminous curly hair and a yellow t-shirt with a badge points confidently into the distance, one foot on a grey rock and binoculars hanging at the hip. Beside them, a small white robot with a smiling screen face and an antenna rolls forward on a single wheel, propelled by a rocket flame. Illustration by Alejandro Milà.

Sketching our way to the crew

Every character starts on paper. Well, on my iPad screen, using Procreate. We were asked for diverse, positive and imaginative characters.

These are the sketches that made it through the filter, out of the dozens we produced. At this stage, variety was what mattered. A crew this diverse needs strong silhouettes so you can tell who is who at a glance, even at a small size inside a game interface. As in every project, the characters changed quite a lot once we landed them in Illustrator.

From Procreate pencil to Illustrator vector

The sketches were a hit with the Meta team, and at first many of the vector illustrations looked a lot like them. But then many characters changed in size, gender and ethnicity.

All of them wear the Meta Spark badge, united by a common space mission. The color palette may look limited, but by combining it with whites, blacks and greys we made it feel much richer.

Character design lineup for an interactive Meta game, drawn in a flat vector style, showing a team of space explorers standing on a pale grey alien landscape under two small suns. From left to right: a hulking blue alien with tusks and a fierce scowl leaning on a rock, a bearded scientist in glasses and a white lab coat holding a test tube, a woman with long curly hair and a blue cape striking a superhero pose with her hands on her hips, a boy in a red shirt pointing ahead with binoculars at his side, a giant friendly white robot raising one arm behind him, and a woman with short red hair and goggles holding a clipboard, with a wrench on her belt. They all wear matching circular badges. Illustration by Alejandro Milà.

Why character design matters in games

In this interactive experience, the characters told the story before a single line of dialogue appeared.

A good cast does more than carry the company’s message: it builds the brand, conveys the company’s personality, creates a more relaxed learning environment and makes the message easier to digest and more memorable for the audience.

Probably, you have sent a logo to your fellow graphic designer and you're wondering why is taking too long to place that logo on the material you need to send to the client.

99,9% of the time is because we receive a low-resolution logo or the logo format is not the right one for the placement.

Which logo file format is best?

If you are not a design expert or you are taking your first steps in the design industry you might have some doubts about what's the difference between a vector and a raster file.

Take a read of this Design Positive article to understand the differences between these two schools of thought.
